Prodigal Son season 2 is confirmed to be premiering next year on Fox. Ahead of its official release, the crime drama has been dropping updates, including casting news. In fact, two recurring characters are coming who could further shake up the story.

Deadline reported that Christian Borle and Michael Potts are joining the upcoming Prodigal Son season 2. The two were cast in a recurring role, and their characters will have a significant impact on Malcolm Bright (Tom Payne) and his father, Martin Whitly (Michael Sheen).

Borle is set to play Friar Pete, who is said to be an "extremely dangerous character." He is a former friar ejected from his church due to his extremist views. He is famous for his notorious killing spree, which leads him to the psychiatric ward with Martin.

Despite that, Friar Pete is a "careful listener" and "offers respite" to other patients. He will have an important part, specifically a key consultant, in the latest case of Bright. This person knows a lot about Martin since they've spent some time together.

Meanwhile, Potts plays the role of Dr. Brandon Marsh in Prodigal Son season 2. He's going to have a role in Martin's storyline, as well. The character will be the new therapist of Bright's father at Claremont. He's striving hard at his job as he wanted to have a breakthrough with his psychiatric patients.

Friar Pete and Dr. Brandon Marsh are both tied to Martin in certain ways. They're going to be an essential part of his story, albeit a recurring role. Their arrival could lead to more revelations about Bright's father and some buried secrets might be uncovered.

Prodigal Son season 2 will also focus on Bright's sister, Ainsley Whitly (Halston Sage), especially after what happened in the first installment. She's becoming more like their father and seemingly embracing her dark side. She's responsible for Nicholas Endicott's (Dermot Mulroney) death.

That particular incident turned Ainsley into a different person. The official synopsis of the new season notes that Bright must take care and protect his sister and mother Jessica Whitly (Bellamy Young) from a secret that could ruin their family again.

But then, Martin will try to repair and his relationship with him and wants to become close to his son. Bright's life may fall apart as he keeps struggling to deal with his own demon. He needs to battle the horror from his past while keeping his family together.

Prodigal Son season 2 arrives on Tuesday, January 12, 2021, on Fox.
