Apple's iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max ProRAW feature makes it possible for you to improve and level up your photography game.
If you recently bought yourself an iPhone 12 Pro or iPhone 12 Pro Max for your photography hobby needs, then you should also upgrade its software to Apple's latest version of the iOS. Apple's iOS 14.3 brings along the ProRAW camera feature to the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, allowing you to level up your photography game and photoshoot skills.
Even if you are not a camera enthusiast and you have either the iPhone 12 Pro or iPhone 12 Pro Max, you would want to check the ProRAW feature that came along with Apple's iOS 14.3 update. You might be wondering what is ProRAW? Most professional photographers capture images in RAW format, which means it contains unprocessed image information straight from the sensor of the camera.
According to Apple, the ProRAW feature provide users with multi-frame image processing and computational photography benefits, such as those made available by Deep Fusion and Smart HDR, and combines these with the flexibility and depth of a raw image format. With the ProRAW camera feature brought by Apple's iOS 14.3 update to the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, you can now use your phone to capture images in RAW.
Now that you have upgraded your iPhone 12 Pro or iPhone 12 Pro Max to Apple's latest software, iOS 14.3, what should you do next? Before you start using your iPhone's camera, you need to first turn on its ProRAW feature by going to the Settings, then tapping on Camera, and then Formats. Once there, toggle on the Apple ProRAW. After doing this, launch your iPhone's camera app and check if you see a RAW icon or symbol at the top right of your phone's screen with a strike through it. This means the feature is off and your camera is still set for capturing HEIC/JPEG images. To turn on, tap the RAW icon to begin shooting in RAW and tap it again to return to shooting HEIC/JPEG images.

If you want the camera of your iPhone 12 Pro or iPhone 12 Pro Max, which you recently updated to Apple's iOS 14.3, to shoot in RAW continuously, you can leave the ProRAW feature on all the time. You can do this by going to Settings, then Camera, and then Preserve Settings, then toggling on Apple ProRAW to preserve your camera settings. You need to know, however, that using ProRAW all the time can rapidly deplete your storage space. This is because images captured in RAW can have very high file size as compared to those snapped in HEIC mode. For instance, a 2.5MB HEIC or JPEG image may potentially become 29MB if you shoot the same image in ProRAW mode.
You should also know that the ProRAW feature of the iPhone 12 Pro or iPhone 12 Pro Max, which you recently upgraded to Apple's iOS 14.3, will not make the images you captured really better. However, it can potentially get the image you captured closer to a specific look you are chasing. Then again, certain lighting situations can affect the shot. Try turning on the feature and see for yourself the difference.
