A new character is coming in The Resident season 4 and he's going to play an essential role in Dr. Randolph Bell's (Bruce Greenwood) storyline. It has been confirmed that How to Get Away with Murder alum Conrad Ricamora is joining the rest of the cast on the medical drama.

The Resident season 4 will introduce Ricamora as Dr. Jake Wong, Dr. Bell's former stepson in his previous marriage. The two don't have a great relationship and some wounds from the past might be re-opened because of his presence. The character is set to make his first appearance in the second episode.

Dr. Jake Wong is described as a gay plastic surgeon and a singer-songwriter during his free time. His relationship with Dr. Bell ended bitterly after the latter, and Jake's mother divorced. Now, an exclusive first look at the character has been unveiled.

The preview photo showed the character seemingly having an intense conversation with his former stepfather. Yet, it looks like Dr. Bell wanted to repair his relationship with Jake, something that executive producers Todd Harthan, Amy Holden Jones, Peter Elkoff, and Andrew Chapman hinted.

The EPs jointly teased to the aforementioned outlet that Dr. Bell will try to reconnect with some of the people in his past. His decision was rooted after seeing loving families rally around sick relatives in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Bell burned a few bridges in the past, but he'll now try to reconcile with Jake. However, his estranged stepson won't make everything easy for him. The EPs noted that he has to earn his trust again, and throughout The Resident season 4, the storyline will provide "big emotional moments."

As the latest installment progresses, viewers will see more of Dr. Bell's vulnerable side. He may recognize that he has to confront the people in his life before. Since Jake is someone from his past, some secrets and untold stories might be revealed.

Meanwhile, the premiere of The Resident season 4 will feature the pandemic, as well as Conrad Hawkins (Matt Czuchry) and Nic Nevin's (Emily VanCamp) wedding. In "A Wedding, A Funeral," the pandemic-themed storyline will be featured, but it won't be presented in the present time.

The synopsis notes that a flashback during the early days of the COVID-19 crisis will be featured. It will shed light on the heroism of the doctors and healthcare workers, and the toll the virus took on everyone at Chastain Memorial.

The Resident season 4 is premiering with its new episodes starting on Tuesday, January 12, on Fox.
