Mesut Ozil remains in cold storage although the German could end up playing ball again for some other club. Discussions are underway with at least two Major League Soccer teams exploring a potential deal with Arsenal FC.

Since being left out by Mikel Arteta from his regular mix, Ozil appeared content sitting out and collecting his due. He holds a hefty contract with Arsenal FC and preferred to see it through than play for some other club.

But with the January transfer window here, some clubs are trying to pry the 32-year-old defender from the Gunners. Fenerbahce and DC United are two teams exploring possibilities although nothing has been agreed on. Something could be announced in the coming weeks.

Critics have different takes on the Ozil situation. Some feel that he could still be of use for Arteta and the Gunners – at least until his deal ends. However, some have pinned the blame on the German for his attitude and inconsistent play. The latest to comment on that is Michael Thomas, a former Gunner who had his share of success at Emirates Stadium in 1989 and 1991.

“Amazing vision and quality but not enough consistency to go with these attributes,” Thomas said when he spoke with CaughtOffside. “His partnership with [Alexis] Sanchez could have been so much more, but blossomed at times.”

Like most, Thomas felt that Ozil could have made a difference. But rather than delve into that, he instead lauds other players who have stepped up to help the club that has been struggling.

Among those he lauded include Emile Smith Rowe. He is one of the academy graduates who has shown willingness to improve and has been playing his heart out for Arsenal.

“He’s a player who doesn’t show fear and knows the quality he can bring to the team, whilst showing the work ethic and willingness to keep improving we need at Arsenal,” Thomas said.

Thomas also shared some views on other players like Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette. With Arteta forced to adjust, they are some of the players who need to play outside their comfort zone.

This is a reason why Arsenal could do well to take in a midfielder this transfer window. Budget is a problem but all that could be resolved soon.

Ozil holds a large chunk of their budget. If other clubs are serious about getting him and make an acceptable offer, the Gunners may move forward and take in someone who can fill in that defensive void.
