Ray Donovan is coming back even though crime-drama has been officially cancelled on Showtime after season 7 in February 2020. It was recently confirmed that the Liev Schreiber-led show is returning in the form of a feature-length film revival. The movie will, reportedly, continue the events in the TV series.

Ray Donovan picks up where season 7 ended and it will also incorporate flashbacks during the younger years of the titular character. Following the conclusion of the series, fans have been hoping for some sort of revival as the story left a massive cliffhanger for the Hollywood fixer.

The series ended with the revelations of the deepest secrets of the Donovan family and it ruined everything apart. Ray (Schreiber) finally uncovered the truth about his dead sister Bridget, who was abused and rejected by Jim Sullivan (Peter Gerety), the patriarch of the rival Boston crime family.

The feud between the Donovans and the Sullivans has been a major part of Ray Donovan ever since the series started. Things just started to fall back into place when Ray and Jim's daughter, Molly Sullivan, (Kerry Condon) became romantically involved. However, their ugly history makes their situation complicated.

Ray executed Jim, and Molly was aware of that. Jim's son, Declan (Kevin Corrigan), also got into a shootout with Ray's father, Mickey (Jon Voight), over old money. This leads to the death of Smitty (Graham Rogers), the husband of Ray's daughter, Bridget (Kerris Dorsey).

Mickey caused pain for the two generations of Bridget Donovan and the whole family, prompting Ray to go after his father to end the cycle of violence. The upcoming movie will continue this story, with the titular character hunts for Mickey in the present day. Their history 30 years ago will be explored, as well.

Aside from playing the lead character, Schreiber is also co-writing the script of the movie. He'll be working alongside series showrunner David Hollander, who will be directing the film. Also, co-president of Entertainment for Showtime Gary Levine released a statement following the announcement.

Levine said in the statement that they've heard from many loyal fans that they're not ready to say goodbye to Ray Donovan when it ended after season 7. He, then, said that they are all delighted that both Liev and David create a "thrilling new chapter of this iconic series."
