Space Sweepers might just get a follow-up movie as the producers and the actors are reportedly in discussion to do the sequel.

According to reports, an insider from the Space Sweepers production confirmed that plans for the sequel has been set in motion. While early details have not been elaborated, the source also said that they plan to release the movie in China.

Space Sweepers is South Korea's very first movie set in outer space. Written and directed by Jo Sung-hee, the film is set in 2092 and centers on workers who rid the atmosphere of space junk. They encounter a child from one of the space debris, who was reported missing. The child apparently possesses dangerous skills and must be returned to its creator.

Released in Netflix in February, the film was supposed to debut on the big screen but COVID-19 got in the way. It is currently one of the most-watched programs globally on the streaming platform.

The news comes as Netflix announced plans to invest $500 million and expand its South Korean content on the platform. The streaming giant has two movies underway with Moral Sense and Carter.

Moral Sense covers a BDSM relationship between two co-workers. Carter is a uniquely developed one-scene one-take movie about a man who wakes up inside a motel and starts hearing voices in his head about going on a rescue mission of a kidnapping incident.

Netflix is also bent on doing its first Korean sitcom as well as a slate of drama series and reality TV programs. Executives said that their subscribers around the world are "falling in love" with Korean stories. The Koreans call this phenomenon the Hallyu or the Korean wave.

Meanwhile, it's still unclear when the sequel to Space Sweepers could begin production. Its star Song Joong-ki (Tae-ho) is currently working on the drama series Vincenzo, which is also streaming on Netflix.

This project is the second tie-up with Jo and Song, who previously worked on A Werewolf Boy. Song said that he loves the characters Jo comes up with because they have pure and warm hearts. The actor also said that he had a fun experience working in a space movie so a third team-up might not be far behind.

According to Screen Rant, the Space Sweepers sequel could get a new villain given the fate of Richard Armitage's character. The story might focus on the Victory crew finding Tae-ho's missing daughter.
