Star Trek: Discovery season 4 might be setting up a new love interest for Sonequa Martin-Green's Michael Burnham. She unexpectedly met Cleveland "Book" Booker (David Ajala) after landing alone in the future. Their relationship may further unfold as the story progresses.

Star Trek: Discovery season 4 will continue to follow Burnham, who is now living into the future. She's been away from her crew for almost a year and was forced to live her life in the new world where she landed. There, she met Book, a courier in the 32nd century.

In a previous interview with Gold Derby, executive producer Michelle Paradise discussed how Burnham and Book's relationship will be different. She said that they needed someone to guide Martin-Green's character in navigating the new world and help her learn things -- and Ajala's character is the right one.

Paradise added that they wanted a romance to blossom between the two. She explained that when they're developing Book, they wanted the character to be fun. They wanted him and Burnham to have a fun dynamic that is different from what the latter had with others in the past.

In the same interview, Martin-Green discussed her character's relationship with Book. She noted that a lot of the "new Burnham" was impacted by Book. The actress also shared that the introduction of Ajala's character has a personal impact on her as a person.

As for how their relationship plays out in Star Trek: Discovery season 4, the showrunners previously told Deadline that Burnham's relationship with Book "will be tested in many ways." This is something that viewers and fans must look forward to when the series returns.

Meanwhile, the third installment sets up new stories for the next chapter. The Discovery crew attempted to rebuild what was left in the galaxy after being hit by a cataclysmic event called "The Burn." They will continue to fix what was broken even though they know it wouldn't be an easy task.

The previous outing also introduced the first trans actor in the franchise, with Ian Alexander playing the role of Gray. The character is set to return in Star Trek: Discovery season 4 and he's going to play an essential role in the story.

In another interview with Inverse, Paradise confirmed that Alexander's character will be important in the latest installment. She also teased that the new chapter will continue to incorporate the episodic structure of season 3, rather than the seasons 1 and 2's season-long arcs.

Star Trek: Discovery season 4 is expected to premiere in late 2021 on Paramount+.
