Netflix has officially dropped the trailer of its much-awaited new Korean series "The Silent Sea." Led by the South Korean heartthrob Gong Yoo, the clip shows how eerie the new show will be.

Set in 2075, "The Silent Sea" shows a desert-like Earth without its natural resources. So, a special team has to do a top-secret mission in an abandoned research station on the moon, called "the silent sea," to save the planet.

The trailer gives a sneak peek of how worst the situation on Earth has turned out. The news reveals the world's water will dramatically decrease by 40% over the next 10 years. So, Song Ji-ahn (Bae Doona), a space biologist, is tasked by the government to join a space mission to retrieve an important sample at the abandoned moon station, Balhae Station, and return to Earth soon after.

However, when the space mission team finally gets to the station, things are not what they expect them to be, Soompi noted. The station is filled with dead bodies and the group is about to meet a number of mysteries.

With all the oddities happening, Song Ji-ahn will question the government and doubt if its reports are true. "There are too many things we don't know," she says. "I think we need to leave here now," Han Yoon-jae (Goon Yoo), the team leader, suggests.

Other stars who will be seen in "The Silent Sea" are Lee Joon as Ryu Tae-seok, the senior engineer and Kim Sun-young as Hong Ga-young, the team doctor. Also, Lee Moo-saeng will join the show as Goon Soo-hyuk, the head of security and Lee Sung-wook as Kim Sun, the spaceship pilot.

Meanwhile, talking about his new Netflix project, Gong Yoo told The Korea Times that this new series was something that he had always wanted to do. In fact, he quickly grabbed the opportunity to play the role of Han Yoon-jae as soon as he read the script.

The 42-year-old actor revealed he had always dreamt of making a science fiction thriller move and he had waited for it for a long time. He also detailed the hardships that he and his co-stars had been through while filming the series, which, he said, had helped the show be unique-something that had never been seen before in Korea.

Fans are about to see Gong Yoo, Bae Doona and the rest of the cast in the eight-episode series when it drops on Netflix worldwide on Christmas Eve, Dec 24. "The Silent Sea" is based on director Choi Hang Yong's 2014 short film, "The Sea of Tranquility."
