Meghan Markle's royal narrative could potentially find its way into the popular Netflix series, The Crown, even as speculation suggests the show is set to conclude with its sixth season.

The upcoming season, currently under production, will delve into the story of Prince William during his years at St Andrews University, where he first crossed paths with his future wife, Kate Middleton.

Inside sources have hinted that showrunners are contemplating a novel direction for the series, potentially following Downton Abbey's successful transition from television to film.

This shift could provide the creative team with an opportunity to delve into contemporary royal intrigues, including the romantic tale of Prince Harry and Meghan, as well as the widely-reported estrangement between the royal brothers.

"A transition like this, though seemingly radical, worked wonders for Downton Abbey, which continued its narrative through 52 TV episodes and then two successful films. A movie or a series of special episodes could give the creators greater latitude to explore a broader timeline and range of themes," shared an insider.

Thus far, The Crown has turned its focus to the tumultuous marriage of Princess Diana and Prince Charles, along with the 1992 blaze that caused significant damage to Windsor Castle.

The insider further elaborated to The Sun, "In the future, there's the possibility to look at the recent history of the royals, with a potential emphasis on the encounter between Harry and Meghan and the subsequent discord with William."

The Crown is expected to make a return later this year with a set of 10 episodes, featuring familiar faces like Imelda Staunton playing the Queen, Sir Jonathan Pryce as the Duke of Edinburgh, Dominic West as Charles, and Elizabeth Debicki portraying Diana, Princess of Wales.

Making his first professional appearance on screen as Prince William is Ed McVey, with Meg Bellamy joining the cast as his love interest, Kate.

Although the series was initially slated to wrap up after the fifth season, its creator and principal writer, Peter Morgan, announced later that the story would extend into a sixth season.
