The protracted saga over the potential takeover of Manchester United, one of the Premier League's most prestigious clubs, is causing an increasing amount of unease among the fan base.

The Glazers, the American owners of the club, announced their intention to offload the team back in November. However, they have yet to reveal a clear choice between the two main contenders for ownership: Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani and British businessman Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Despite persistent rumors that Sheikh Jassim might withdraw from the competition, recent reports have dismissed such speculation. Sheikh Jassim remains a viable contender in the race for the club, even though some believe that the Glazers might opt not to sell after all.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the other potential purchaser, has also shown consistent interest in acquiring Manchester United. His position in the spotlight has led to the reemergence of his scathing 2019 criticism of the club's transfer choices, particularly its decision to sign Brazilian international Fred.

Reflecting on Manchester United's strategy, Ratcliffe told The Times in 2019, "[INEOS] never wants to be the dumb money in town, never." He added, "They [United] are in quite a big pickle as a business... They have been the dumb money, which you see with players like Fred."

Ratcliffe's critical stance on the club's past transfer decisions might soon be validated as United are rumored to be open to letting Fred go. Both Fulham and Jose Mourinho's Roma have shown interest in the Brazilian midfielder.

Transfer talks have also hinted at significant changes for the club. The team is reportedly near to signing Inter Milan's Andre Onana, after having already acquired Mason Mount from Chelsea. Meanwhile, team captain Harry Maguire's future at Old Trafford hangs in the balance, with a possible departure during the summer being considered.

As these significant changes loom over Manchester United, the club's stock price faced a drop of 2.38 percent on Monday, closing at $23.60 on the New York Stock Exchange.

With the club's ownership hanging in the balance and potential alterations to the player lineup, fans are on tenterhooks awaiting further developments. It remains to be seen whether the Glazers will select a preferred bidder or rethink their decision to sell, adding further tension to an already intricate narrative.
