Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are venturing into new territory with their latest Netflix project, a film adaptation of Carley Fortune's novel, "Meet Me At The Lake." The book, which delves into themes of depression, mental health struggles, and childhood trauma, has drawn attention due to its parallels with the couple's personal experiences. However, some critics question the Sussexes' motivations, suggesting they might be capitalizing on their personal tragedies.

The novel's plot centers around Fern, a 32-year-old who returns to Canada after her mother's tragic death in a car crash. This poignant scene has led to speculation about Prince Harry's involvement, given the tragic loss of his mother, Princess Diana, in a similar manner. The story also touches upon themes that resonate with Meghan's revelations about her mental health struggles during her pregnancy with Archie, as shared in the couple's 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey.

PR expert Kieran Elsby voiced concerns about the couple's intentions. "While it's tempting to speculate that these themes align with the couple's public advocacy efforts, it's also fair to wonder if their involvement is more opportunistic than genuine," he remarked. Elsby further highlighted a plot point centered around a parent's death in a car crash, suggesting it might be a "convenient parallel" to Harry's personal experience. He added, "It's a stark reminder of how they leverage personal tragedies for their own gain."

This film project marks a departure for the Sussexes, who have previously focused on docuseries such as "Harry & Meghan" and "Live to Lead." The acquisition of the film rights to "Meet Me At The Lake" reportedly cost the couple a staggering £3 million ($3.8 million). Elsby raised questions about the valuation, pondering if the Sussexes' involvement inflated the price or if it reflected the media attention they invariably attract.

Another point of contention is the novel's content, which includes steamy sex scenes and drug use. Elsby noted that the film would be a significant shift from the couple's previously conservative image. "It's becoming increasingly clear that their path is marked by calculated decisions designed to keep them in the spotlight, regardless of the potential negative repercussions on their reputation and credibility," he stated.

While the Sussexes have not officially confirmed their involvement in the film adaptation, the book's publisher, Penguin Random House, has verified the partnership with Archewell Productions, the couple's production company. Carley Fortune expressed her enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating she is "thrilled about working with Netflix and Archewell" and looks forward to bringing the love story of Will and Fern to the screen.
