The British royal family is facing increasing demands for transparency as uncertainty looms over the health conditions of King Charles III and the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton. The monarchy, long revered for its steadfast presence, finds itself grappling with an unprecedented period of fragility, leaving the public unsettled and speculating about the family's stability.

In early February, Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles, 75, had been diagnosed with cancer and would be stepping back from public-facing duties while undergoing treatment. While he has been spotted attending church services and photographed during an audience with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, the lack of clear information about his condition has fueled widespread speculation.

"Even though he has revealed that he has a form of cancer, that has done nothing to quell the speculation about how seriously ill he may or may not be," royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith told PEOPLE magazine. "That is not doing the monarchy any favors. He is the head of state, and there are constitutional implications."

Meanwhile, the Princess of Wales, 42, underwent abdominal surgery in January, with the palace stating that her recovery would keep her away from public duties until after Easter. Kate has been spotted only once since the procedure, riding in a car with her mother, Carole Middleton, on March 4. The scant details provided by the palace have fueled conspiracy theories about her health and whereabouts.

"Everybody feels unsettled by uncertainty, and there is too much uncertainty that is surrounding the monarchy right now," Bedell Smith said. "Queen Elizabeth used to say, 'I need to be seen to be believed.' It is important for Charles and his reign for the public to know a little bit more."

Harry said in the Oprah Winfrey interview that Prince Charles and Prince William are trapped in the royal family.

Catherine Mayer, author of the biography "Charles: The Heart of a King," noted the stark contrast from the recent past. "This is massively exposing how the royal family has gone from too many people to too few in a short space of time," she said.

With the King and the Princess of Wales sidelined, much of the public-facing responsibilities have fallen on Queen Camilla, 76, and Prince William, 41. The Queen has stepped in for her husband on numerous occasions, while the Prince of Wales has made public appearances a priority after taking time away to care for his wife and children during her recovery.

"His focus is on his work and not on social media," a spokesman for Prince William told PEOPLE, addressing the swirling conspiracy theories surrounding Kate's condition.

The palace's tight-lipped approach has drawn criticism from royal experts, who argue that greater transparency could help quell the uncertainty and restore public confidence in the monarchy's stability.

"The monarchy needs to be that anchor in times of trouble, and any sense of instability, which is inevitable when you have two of the key players out of action, is understandable," Bedell Smith said.

As the royal family navigates this turbulent period, all eyes will be on their ability to weather the storm and emerge with renewed strength and clarity, qualities that have long defined the British monarchy.
