When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were married in May 2018, the Duke of Sussex disclosed how money problems had reared their ugly head and helped set off an epic royal rivalry.
"[Prince] Harry, however, later claimed that his father told him there was 'not enough money to go around' for Meghan, because he was already having to pay for William and Catherine," royal author Robert Jobson claimed in his new book, “Catherine, the Princess of Wales: A Biography of the Future Queen.”
According to the information that Robert provided in his new book, King Charles, who was the Prince of Wales at the time, did not make his decision lightly or with any ill will attached to it, Express UK reported.
"At the outset, [King] Charles had made a concerted effort to form a relationship with Harry's fiancée. 'She is so intelligent and so nice,' he said. 'She makes Harry happy. We could not like her more,'" the book continued. When the issue of money reportedly came up, the niceties immediately went out of the palace window. [Prince] Harry was furious — feeling that he and Meghan were entitled to lavish handouts from 'Pa' in return for agreeing to serve the Crown," Robert went on.
At that time, Prince Charles was using the enormous money from his land in the Duchy of Cornwall to finance not just his own opulent lifestyle, but also the lifestyle of Camilla, who was the Duchess of Cornwall at the time, as well as the entire Cambridge branch of the family, which comprised Prince William, Princess Kate, and their kids. In addition, the king-in-waiting had been providing financial support to Prince Harry's household for a number of years.
At the height of the "Megxit" movement in the beginning of the year 2020, His Royal Highness reportedly allotted 4.7 million pounds from the Duchy at the beginning of that year for both couples and their individual houses. This was apparently the last time that this allocation was made. The relocation costs to Montecito, California, are likely to have accounted for a significant portion of the reduction in Prince Harry and Meghan’s salaries.
The passing of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8, 2022, and King Charles III immediately assumed the throne. Additionally, at the time of Her Majesty's passing, Prince William was elevated to the position of Duke of Cornwall and inherited the wealthy Duchy from his father.
At the beginning of February, when King Charles received the shocking news that he had cancer, his rebellious son, Prince Harry, and the British monarch were reconciled, but Meghan was nowhere to be seen. However, many people's "reconciliation hopes" were not fulfilled as a result of the reunion.
"The brothers are barely speaking so the idea of William wanting Harry to come back and represent the firm is both laughable and unthinkable. The advice was for Harry to leave it a while and come to see his father in Sandringham while he was recuperating, but there was a big rush for Harry to come and see his father. It was all very last minute hence why the meeting was so short,” an unnamed royal insider previously revealed, as per Vanity Fair.
Prince William, who is thought to have made it a point to stay far away from Prince Harry during the 45-minute (or 12-minute) reunion that took place on February 6, was not mentioned at any point during that visit.
