Users of OpenAI's popular chatbot, ChatGPT, and its text-to-video generator, Sora, experienced widespread service disruptions Thursday afternoon. The outage, which began around 1:30 PM ET, left many unable to access the AI tools.
OpenAI acknowledged the issue on its status page, stating that "We are currently experiencing an issue with high error rates on ChatGPT, the API, and Sora." The company attributed the problem to an "upstream provider" and assured users they were monitoring the situation.
This marks the second time this month that ChatGPT and Sora have experienced significant downtime. A previous outage occurred earlier in December, which OpenAI attributed to issues with a new telemetry service.
As of 4:06 PM ET, OpenAI posted an update saying, "We are continuing to work on a fix for this issue." However, the company has not provided an estimated time for when services will be fully restored.
DownDetector, a website that tracks online service outages, reported a surge in user complaints regarding ChatGPT, with over 15,000 incidents logged.
