Costco has issued a recall of more than 3,300 pounds of Kirkland Signature Ahi Tuna Wasabi Poke from its deli sections across 33 states after tests detected listeria monocytogenes in the green onions used in the product, according to Western United Fish Co. and the Food and Drug Administration.

The recall affects poke sold on Sept. 18, 2025, with a sell-by date of Sept. 22, 2025. The tuna was packaged in clear plastic clamshell containers under Costco's Kirkland Signature label with item number 17193. Customers are urged not to eat the product, to dispose of it, and to visit Costco for a full refund.

Western United Fish Co., doing business as Annasea Foods Group, said in a statement, "We are continuing to work with our green onion supplier to determine the root cause." The recall was launched after the supplier reported a positive listeria test result on Sept. 17.

No illnesses have been reported so far, but listeria monocytogenes can cause severe and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly adults, and those with weakened immune systems. The bacteria can also lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, or life-threatening infections in newborns.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, listeria infection is the third leading cause of death from foodborne illness in the U.S., infecting roughly 1,600 people annually. Symptoms may include high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, nausea, diarrhea, confusion, and loss of balance.

The affected product was sold in Costco warehouses across a wide swath of the country, including major markets in New York, Texas, Florida, California, and Washington. More than 10,000 households could have purchased the item given its single-day availability.

This recall is the latest in a series of listeria-related food safety alerts this year. In May, Fresh & Ready Foods LLC recalled more than 80 ready-to-eat products after a listeria outbreak hospitalized at least 10 people in California and Nevada. Earlier in February, Lyons Magnus recalled a range of nutritional shakes linked to 12 deaths.
