Prince Harry's absence from the upcoming wedding of his cousin Peter Phillips and Harriet Sperling is drawing renewed attention to the enduring divisions within Britain's Royal Family, with reports suggesting the Duke of Sussex believes Prince William played a role in his exclusion from the guest list.
The June 6 wedding is expected to bring together senior members of the House of Windsor, including King Charles III, Queen Camilla, Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales. Yet Harry, once a regular fixture at major family gatherings, is not expected to attend, underscoring how deeply relations have deteriorated since his departure from royal duties in 2020.
The reported snub has reignited questions about whether the rift between William and Harry now extends beyond the brothers themselves and into their wider network of family relationships. While no member of the Royal Family has publicly addressed the guest list, royal commentators and unnamed sources have offered competing explanations for Harry's absence.
According to royal commentator Emily Nash, the decision appears less connected to palace politics than to the simple reality that Harry and Peter Phillips have grown apart over time. Speaking to Page Six, Nash said the cousins have not spoken for several years, making the absence of an invitation less surprising than some observers suggest.
Nash argued that wedding invitations are ultimately shaped by personal relationships rather than royal hierarchy. Peter, the son of Princess Anne and one of the least controversial members of the Royal Family, has largely remained outside public disputes while maintaining close relationships with senior royals.
That interpretation differs sharply from claims attributed to sources cited by The Examiner. According to the report, Harry is "100% sure" that William has influenced Peter's attitude toward him and contributed to what he perceives as increasingly cold treatment from members of the family.
The source reportedly acknowledged that Harry and Peter had naturally drifted apart over the years but suggested the Duke of Sussex believes William's influence played a decisive role in the widening distance. Those claims remain unverified, and neither Harry's representatives nor Buckingham Palace have commented publicly.
The controversy arrives against the backdrop of years of public tension between the brothers. Since stepping away from royal duties with Meghan Markle, Harry has participated in several high-profile projects, including Netflix documentaries, television interviews and his memoir Spare, all of which contained criticism of royal life and family relationships.
Those disclosures deepened divisions within the monarchy and have made any potential reunion between William and Harry a subject of intense media scrutiny. Royal events that might otherwise focus on celebrations or commemorations frequently become dominated by questions about whether the brothers will meet, speak or attempt reconciliation.
Nash suggested that concern may have factored into Peter Phillips' wedding planning.
"Having both brothers there would have put a completely different slant on the whole event," she said.
