President Donald Trump says he wants to ban U.S. diesel exports as soaring fuel prices put pressure on American drivers, truckers and farmers ahead of November's midterm elections.

"I've called for it," Trump told reporters, confirming he has been discussing the proposal with administration officials.

Trump said he asked Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to examine whether stopping diesel exports could increase domestic supply and help curb inflation.

"We're examining that, whether it's feasible in terms of the overall refining capacity and whether a full or partial ban would work," Bessent said.

With U.S. diesel prices climbing above $6.50 per gallon, the administration is under pressure to address rising transportation and agricultural costs.

Trump said a decision would come "fast." No ban has been announced, and officials are still assessing whether export restrictions would actually lower domestic fuel prices.
