Oppo is expected to release a new batch of smartphones, and most are hoping to see one from the Oppo R15 series, which was launched last March. Based on tradition, most expected the company to come out with an “S” series to append the current line.

However, it seems this will not be the case. Instead of offering “S” variants, the Chinese consumer electronics company is believed to be fast-forwarding to a new clan with the Oppo R17 series.

The Oppo R17 name had already been teased at a media event sponsored by the company. Aside from that, there was an unknown device that came out at Tenaa where the Oppo R17 name was teased, GSM Arena said.

That leak confirmed the existence of a new device carrying exciting color schemes and a phone that would come with a dual camera. Only the rear portion of the device was rendered, and noticeable was the absence of a fingerprint reader that comes as a standard for most phones.

There is a possibility that the traditional biometric security could be up and front. If so, this could be a technology shift most smartphone companies are headed. Phones who have adopted the in-screen fingerprint sensor include the Vivo X21, Mi 8 Explorer Edition and the Huawei Mate RS as mentioned in a previous post. There is also the possibility of the device carrying a face-recognition security feature, one that most phones are likewise integrating.

Other noteworthy specs included in that leaked TENAA document include a 6.3-inch display, a 3,415 mAh battery and the model numbers PBCM00 and PBCT00. The volume buttons are on the left while the power and sleep button are placed on the right side of the device. The 3.5 mm jack is still around, something that can be found at the bottom.

The recent photos may have cleared things a bit with a shot of the front panel of the device. The bezels are thin and relatively similar to the Oppo R15 with the notch smaller than what the iPhone-X sports. With a broader display, the possibility of integrating an in-screen fingerprint display sensor makes more sense.

Yet to be determined is the chipset that Oppo R17 will come with. However, BGR said that this device could be the first to arrive with a whopping 10 GB of RAM.

For comparison purposes, the Oppo R15 is powered by a 2 GHz octa-core processor backed by 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal storage (expandable up to 256 GB via microSD). It comes with a 16 MP primary camera and a 20 MP front-facing shooter. It came with Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box. With 10 GB of RAM, the chipset and other features are likely higher than the specs that the Oppo R15 offers.
