Despite the understandable initial qualms about security, WeChat is still on a steady growth.
Speaking to CNN Money, Naspers CEO Bob Van Dijk had kind words for the upstart Chinese chat app. He said that it was the right decision to follow WeChat's path-the path where companies put all their eggs in one basket, that is, the Tencent basket. He also said that while it's understandable that people have problems with privacy and the 'meddlesome' attitude of the Chinese government, WeChat's growth appears unimpeded.
Medium weighs in on the successful growth of WeChat, which has 900 million active users per month. Owing to the sheer number of people in China, WeChat's popularity has never waned. In fact, these same number of people helped the voice messaging app overtake Facebook in app usage-66 minutes compared to Facebook's norms of 50 minutes per user per day.
There is a great number of possibilities for a user base the same size WeChat has. For instance, it could offer unlimited potential for advertisers. There are also various add-ons like games, payments for stickers, and a lot of other options for monetization; even a freemium arrangement can add big money.
However, WeChat stands to have a problem many apps will pay big money to fret about--how to keep expanding even after it surpasses 1 billion users.
Per CNN Tech, it's the kind of problem that Facebook is already experiencing. Given that 1 billion users are still short of Facebook's 2.1 billion users per month, WeChat will have a lot of time trying to find out how to add more users outside of China. The majority of its user base is Chinese, but it's struggling to add users from outside the country.
Perhaps, that it arrived late on the scene in many other countries is one thing to blame. When it managed to break into the international market, Facebook, WhatsApp, Viber, and other chat apps were already taking in users. What's more, while it's a do-it-all app in China, out of China, people from other countries prefer to use tried and tested methods like PayPal to send money, something WeChat has a feature for.
That being said, with a billion users already under WeChat's spell, it can afford to focus on bettering its position among them.
