Just recently, a Hong Kong bus driver was deemed guilty as charge after bumping his bus to a woman crossing a pedestrian lane. The judge, despite the driver's reason, didn't find any strong proof to free the man from all the charges against him. What happened?
The Incident: The Bus Driver and His Allergy
The 42-year old driver, named Leung Wai-kong, is undergoing a serious trial for his careless driving, which caused the death of an innocent woman. The driver filed a non-guilty charge at the start of his trial in August.
It was remembered that the driver, while on the KMB 1A double-decker, carelessly drove onto the busy streets of Tsim Sha Tsui, which killed a 26-year old woman. After the incident, the suspect was immediately arrested and interrogated. Wai-Kong blamed the cheese for his action. He admitted that he might have lost his focus after eating cheese that he is allergic on.
Later on, a university lecturer was called on to the court as a witness. The man suspected that the driver passed out because of the pain that he is experiencing while having acute gastroenteritis. This statement helped in building up strong questions against the suspect. Judge Frankie Yiu Fun-che questioned Leung's decision of still driving while feeling sick. The judge told that the people affected should still be the top priority in considering your effectiveness at work. In light of what happened during the incident, the driver didn't consider the road users.
Leung Wai-kong's Reason Isn't Enough?
The judge even watched the camera footage where the driver was seen as weak and sick twice before the said incident. Even the medical experts told that no driver should be driving any vehicle when they are not feeling well, especially if they would vomit and pass out.
Because of this, the judge put on an investigation into the team for further reports. The driver would have his final verdict on September 10. A court evident was made present recently telling that the driver Leung passed out after the said incident. The people around him had to wake him up after what had happened.
