A major Palestinian figure fired upon US President Donald Trump on Tuesday for its decision to cut off funding for the United Nations Palestinian refugee agency (UNRWA), calling the move from the American administration as a clear violation of the international humanitarian law.
According to Reuters, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki said this week that Trump's action is an attack to the international law governing humanitarian efforts.
The minister, who recently spoke at a meeting of the Arab League in Cairo on Tuesday, added that Washington's decision to undermine the humanitarian funding has also directly inflicted the rights of the Palestinian people.
In light of Trump's abrupt withdrawal, the UNRWA has been trying to cover the USD$200 million-worth of the deficit left by the US aid fund cut which it eventually gets from other donors in the Gulf States and Europe. However, this clearly put more strain on the relationship between the Palestinian leadership and Washington.
Earlier on, Trump hoisted his support in recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital, which came in direct conflict with the Arab interests. Neighboring countries such as Saudi Arabia, a staunch ally of the Palestine state, issued warnings saying that Trump's reversal of the decade-long policy could ignite serious problems in the region.
Aside from the oil-rich kingdom, foreign government bodies, as well as international organizations, lambasted Trump on his meddling with the Israeli affairs.
The Move To Cut Ties With The US
According to the Times of Israel, the Palestinian Authority is now considering the option to ultimately cut off its ties with the US government under the Trump administration following the cancelation of humanitarian funds.
Sources claiming knowledge of the issue were cited by the news outlet saying that PA leader Mahmoud Abbas has expressed his intention to sever all ties with Trump who has now become an enemy of the Palestinian people as well as of the peace in the embattled region.
The person further told the local press that the American president, with his international policies, is one of the reasons why terror and violence continue to proliferate in their part of the world.
Israel Reacts
In the midst of the aggravated response coming from Palestinian constituents, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel praised the American leader for finally putting an end on the PLO humanitarian mission. According to the Israeli leader, the US, in the person of Trump, made the right decision with regards to Palestine.
