The battle royale genre is seeing more titles pop up one after another. Now, a recent leak says a famous title is popping up into a new platform.
Since its release, "PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds," or simply "PUBG," has been a PC- and Xbox-exclusive. A leak, however, says it might soon come to the PlayStation 4, and add more players to the already staggering number of players it has, IGN reported.
The leak, spotted by a guy who goes by the name Nibellion on Twitter, appears to be a listing on the Korean Ratings Board. Nibellion said "PUBG for PS4" is listed there, indicating a possible release if true.
Should the leak prove true, Microsoft would have to welcome the fact that rival company Sony will now have a new battle royale offering in addition to other titles existing, such as the notorious "Fortnite." PUBG was one of their exclusive titles that gave them an edge over Sony, but now it looks like that edge is disappearing.
Engadget notes that Microsoft gave a lot of effort to push PUBG as some sort of exclusive title, to the point that PUBG players and non-players alike would start to think that they own the game. From campaigns to videos to console bundles, they made people think that it was indeed theirs to begin with.
This recent leak, however, disputes that.
Last year, PUBG developer Bluehole was rumored to be in talks with Sony. Of course, PUBG didn't come to the PS4 for some time after that rumor. This is probably because of another rumor that said Bluehole offered a longer exclusivity period to Microsoft, one that is said to last until the middle of 2018 "or longer."
Microsoft must have paid a large sum to get that deal and let the game stay an Xbox-exclusive longer. Now that the game is listed "for PS4," it seems that the exclusivity period is ending real soon.
And so, the rivalry between Microsoft and Sony, or the Xbox and PS4, specifically, continues. The question is, when will PUBG exactly come to the PS4? Only time will tell.
PUBG will have to face several challenges when it does arrive on the PS4. For starters, there's Fortnite and "H1Z1," as well as "Call of Duty: Blackout" and the battle royale mode for "Battlefield 5" named "Firestorm." PUBG will also have to face the fact that it's more costly to play compared to other free-to-play titles.
Nevertheless, PUBG has already gained a following. Hopefully, that following will follow the game into the PS4.
