Most, if not all, of us know how obesity can be hazardous to health as it can be linked to major illnesses and diseases such as hypertension, heart problems, and diabetes. But in a recent study conducted at the Trinity College Dublin, scientists were able to dig deep into another health problem that can be rooted out of these extra fats.

Through a study conducted, which is focused on the effects of excess fats in the body, scientists and authors were able to debunk the link between cancer and obesity. Considered as one of the recent breakthroughs in science, the study revealed how excess fat can actually freeze the "body's immune surveillance systems," which could paralyze "cancer-fighting Natural Killer cells."

Given this discovery, the scientists were also able to come up with another way to put an end in the increasing rate of cancer globally. According to Irish Central, the team was able to find a possible and effective way to cure cancer by reviving these Natural Killer cells so that it could once again fight cancer cells.

The researchers were able to go through the study by using mice as its model organisms. By observing these mice, experts found out that as the mice get fatter and become obese, the Natural Killer cells found on the model's body were also clogged up with fats. Though covered with fats, these cells are still alive but are just made useless. It can still recognize cancer cells, excess fats just prevent it from fighting them.

As the study progresses, experts are able to understand more of the importance of reviving these fat-clogged Natural Cancer-Killer cells in order to combat tumors. They were even successful in reprogramming these cells in order for them to come back to action, according to Inquirer.

Lydia Lynch, the Associate Professor in Immunology at Trinity College Dublin and also a researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital in the US and Harvard Medical School, said, "Our results highlight immune-metabolic pathways as a promising target to reverse immune defects in obesity and suggest that metabolic reprogramming of Natural Killer cells may kick-start their anti-cancer activity and improve treatment outcomes."

The researcher also said that right now, it is very alarming to see the numbers of obese people still increase despite the endless warning of medical practitioners about the risks it could bring to the body. With it, the call to a much deeper understanding of how obesity can cause deadly diseases and other types of cancer should be done. By doing so, new strategies to end the problem will surely be discovered.
