The new Game of Thrones Season 8 teaser released by HBO at the 2019 Golden Globes tells of a grim fate for Sansa Stark. Fans may see the character die in the final installment.
The 2-second preview shows the first meeting between Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke). Through gritted teeth, Lady Stark welcomes the Mother of Dragons to Winterfell. Daenerys gives a reserved smile in response.
The two women's interaction sparked all kinds of speculations about what their relationship will be like in Game of Thrones Season 8. Some claim Sansa is not at all happy that a Targaryen is in Winterfell given the reputation the family has in Westeros.
However, what intrigue fans the most are the words Sansa tells Daenerys. In their first meeting, she surrenders the kingdom to the queen.
"Winterfell is yours, your grace."
Reddit user CleverD3vil says Sansa's words match what her father Ned Stark said to King Robert Baratheon when he visited Winterfell in Season 1 Episode 1 of Game of Thrones. The then-ruler of Westeros visited the northern kingdom with his children and his wife Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey).
This could be a standard greeting among royalties and has no real significance. However, given the show's propensity to hide Easter Eggs in almost any scene and detail, then one can assume these words foreshadow a grim fate for Sansa as it did her father.
Ned Stark greeted King Robert with the same words. Next thing, he is down on his knees awaiting execution. The former King of the North had his head chopped off and put on a stick for everyone in Kings Landing to see, including his two daughters Sansa and Arya. Could Sansa fall under the same fate as her father's in Game of Thrones Season 8?
Adding fuel to this speculation is the fact that her direwolf is already dead and in the history of Game of Thrones, those whose direwolves have died are already dead too. Likewise, the first episode of the final season contains plenty of callbacks to the show's pilot. Instead of King Robert's procession arriving in Winterfell, it is Daenerys and her army with Jon Snow (Kit Harington) leading. Certainly, Sansa's meeting with Daenerys and her greeting are one of these callbacks.
Regardless if Sansa dies or not, fans can expect a most gruesome season yet from the HBO show. Turner said in a previous interview that Game of Thrones Season 8 is "bloodier than ever" and "full of betrayal, full of war, full of danger."
