Are you one of those who is fond of eating leftover foods especially the ones that have been kept for more than three days? Then this could be an eye-opener for you.
A 20-year-old student from Brussels, Belgium, died a couple of hours later after eating a leftover pasta that was kept inside the kitchen counter for more than four days, as reported by Health.
Sources claimed that the spaghetti was made from tomato sauce and has been stored in the container at room temperature.
According to the family of the young man, the student eventually felt sick after consuming the leftover but still tried to shake the pain off thinking he was just experiencing a normal food poisoning.
The student experienced headaches, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and nausea. According to Daily Mail, he was given a lot of water to complement the lost hydration in his body but was not given any medication for food poisoning.
To at least lessen the ache, the young man known as AJ, decided to sleep his pain away. Unfortunately, a few hours after he rested, his parents found him unresponsive and lifeless without any idea how a spaghetti has ended the life of their son in such a short period of time.
When the experts decided to identify the cause of death of the young man, the autopsy revealed that he died because of food poisoning caused by Bacillus Cereus, a type of spore-forming bacteria that could cause its victim to suffer from diarrhea and vomiting. The bacteria infestation was so severe that it caused his liver to eventually fail.
A sample of the pasta was also brought to Belgium's National Reference Laboratory for Food-borne Outbreaks. The results revealed that though the sauce was safe, spaghetti was indeed contaminated with the said bacteria.
This incident happened about 10 years ago on October 2008, but the case has been put back in headlines as a YouTuber, Dr. Bernard, a licensed practitioner who studies bizarre medical cases through his social media channel, posted a video regarding the incident. The video has presently gathered the attention of people once again.
Dr. Bernard, said, "Many people eat pasta, or any form of noodles, that are leftover for a day or two and they're fine, but be careful of food left out for more than a few hours." The expert further warned people "if the food smells funny, it's always better to be safe than sorry."
