After a long wait and a bumpy time in production, American Gods season 2 is almost ready to air on Starz. However, fans of the novel by Neil Gaiman might find the television adaptation slightly different.
For one thing, American Gods season 2 is introducing Sam Black Crow early on. Devery Jacobs has been cast in the role of the hitch-hiking student with half-Cherokee roots.
According to SyFy Wire, Sam Black Crow will meet Shadow Moon (played by Ricky Whittle) as soon as the first episode rolls in American Gods season 2. In the books, Sam Black Crow's character is described as a strong, fun-loving and meddlesome woman who's actually a spiritual cynic despite her Native American background.
Jacobs, who is Kahnawake Mohawk in real life, revealed that she has been hoping to be part of American Gods season 2 since she followed the first season as a fan. "I love how the series doesn't shy away from political characters and topics and reflects the varying cultures and beliefs that are held in this melting pot called America."
But that's not all the tweaks viewers can expect from the series. According to Den of Geek, the background story for Mad Sweeney (played by Pablo Schreiber) will also be expanded and explored this season.
Schreiber confirmed to the press that his character's storyline will be about revenge and retribution. The actor said that because Mad Sweeney felt abused and misused in American Gods season 1, he's harboring so much guilt and that will be a crucial part of his journey in season 2.
Gaiman, who is also one of the executive producers of American Gods, said that he's got 6,000 years' worth of backstory for this interesting character and most of it were not written in the books. He was, however, able to use the materials he had for Mad Sweeney for the TV show, so viewers of American Gods season 2 will learn something new and different from the book readers.
Meanwhile, critic reviews have slowly been cropping up on the internet ahead of the premiere of American Gods season 2 on Sunday, March 10. Unfortunately, however, the new installment isn't getting much love from the reviewers.
TV Guide said that the new season is a waste of potential and it's a wonder that the show survived despite its problems on the set. It's no secret that American Gods season 2 lost showrunners more than once. The stars from season 1, such as Gillian Anderson and Kristen Chenoweth, also said they would not be returning to the show.
