In a couple of days, fans will see a female superhero, for the first time, to lead the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Captain Marvel. There are a lot of speculations and expectations surrounding Marvel's latest offering, especially with the coming of Avengers: Endgame, including the possibility that Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) is a Skrull.
MCU fans already saw some origin stories, involving the Avengers and other Marvel superheroes, but Captain Marvel promises to be different. Producer Nate Moore says the Brie Larson movie will "subvert" the traditional origin story arc.
"Captain Marvel is an origin movie in that you haven't seen her before," Nate Moore told Cinema Blend. "But, we think we've stumbled upon a structure there that isn't the traditional structure of what origin movies typically are."
Moore adds that they make sure viewers will see something new that they have never seen before in typical Marvel superheroes origin story. Captain Marvel proves it to be true as fans will see Carol (Larson) is already a member of the Starforce in Captain Marvel. She only has little recollections about her life on Earth, and she will remember things when she returns to her home planet.
Carol will be teaming up with SHIELD agent Nick Fury to discover the truth about her past while trying to protect Earth from the invaders. According to Radio Times, Captain Marvel is based on the Kree-Skrull War story arc, which ran from June 1971 to March 1972. Kree made their first flight in the MCU in the movie Guardians of the Galaxy, while the shapeshifting Skrulls had been introduced in other movies.
As the Skrulls would be Captain Marvel's main villain, Marvel's Captain Marvel: The Art of the Movie teased that a major MCU character could be one of these shapeshifters. In a post on Marvel Studios' subreddit, it revealed a Skrull is going to take Nick Fury's form in the new movie. The book showed a Skrull transforming like the SHIELD agent.
However, the photo shown seemed to present a modern-day Fury. Captain Marvel's Fury would look younger as the movie is said to take place in the 90s before he lost his eyes. Also, Comic Book reported a Skrull might only be impersonating Fury, given his authority as a secret spy agent that they could use.
There could be a possible end credit revealed that the Secret Invasion is about to start, and there will be more revelations in other phase 4 movies. The Skrulls may replace and imprison the heroes and personnel, including Nick Fury. Marvel's Captain Marvel: The Art of the Movie will be out on March 5, while Captain Marvel will hit the cinemas on March 8.
