Sony has remained tight-lipped on a possible release date for their upcoming console, the PlayStation 5. While fans aren't treated to an official update from Sony, analysts and rumors give possible release dates. Read on for more details.
So far, Sony hasn't announced a release date for the PlayStation 5, let alone a release window. What is known is that Sony is actually working on it, given that the PlayStation 4 is almost done running its course.
Last year, Sony president Kenichiro Yoshida told the Financial Times that they are working on a successor to the PS4, saying it's "necessary to have a next-generation hardware." Yoshida's words confirmed Sony Interactive Entertainment deputy president John Kodera's tweet in May 2018, saying the PS4 is nearing the end of its life cycle.
These two people and their words considered, fans can be assured that a new PlayStation console is confirmed to be in the works. Several leaked patents further add to this, fueling rumors of the PS5's possible capabilities such as backwards compatibility, and Virtual Reality gaming.
One major detail that's missing, though, is a release date.
Expert analysis
While Sony is silent, analysts looking into possible release dates aren't.
According to Ace Research Institute analyst Hideki Yasuda, the yet-unnamed PS5 can be expected to hit the stores at the end of 2020 and will be sold at the same pace as the PS4. Twinfinite reported. His prediction is based on Sony's financial report.
On the other hand, Avi Greengart, research director for consumer devices at GlobalData, told Inverse that he expects the PS5 to be announced later this year, and will be shipped to buyers in 2020. He expects Microsoft to release the new Xbox quite earlier than the PS5, though.
Possible price slash
Aside from a possible release window, another interesting thing to know would be a possible launch price. If a game developer is correct in his analysis of the current gaming landscape, fans just might be able to buy the PS5 at a lower price.
In an interview, Anton Yundintsev, CEO of Gaijin Entertainment (which is working on "War Thunder") said he believes the PS5 will feature Cloud gaming. This new feature, which he expects to be "available in the new generation of consoles," will lead to cheaper consoles, he said.
So far, these are but speculations and rumors. Although these have come from experts or at least people knowledgable in their fields, it would be best to wait for Sony to make an official announcement. Take it all with a grain of salt.
