Alita: Battle Angel has been one of the best movies to come out this 2019, and fans who have already watched it are asking if the film will have a sequel. Although it wasn't confirmed yet, the ending of the movie feels like it was indeed set for something new and something greater.
The film took 20 years to produce, which is a very long time. As for Alita: Battle Angel 2, the movie might not likely take the same number of years, but Otakukart reported won't come in the next 2-3 years. So, fans need to wait a little bit longer, and it could be released around 2023. But, the movie is a 20th Century Fox release, and it could be the company's last release as Disney's purchase of Fox's movie & TV assets is nearing completion. Thus, the decision in continuing the movie comes down to Disney.
Alita: Battle Angel, which is based on the Japanese manga Gunnm by Yukito Kishiro, is the long-gestating brainchild of James Cameron. He's reportedly developing the project since 2000, with his close friend Robert Rodriguez directing the movie. The story of Alita (Rosa Salazar) was very classical, it deals with her relationship with "father" Dr. Ido (Christoph Waltz), discovering her past as a Berserker, her romance with cyborg-jacker Hugo, and her emerging skills at Motorball - yet all of these were just a portion of a larger story.
The ending of the movie is likely hinting about a possible sequel. Alita loses her lover Hugo, but she understands herself and her place in the world much better. Towards the end of the movie, Nova (Edward Norton) was revealed to be criminal high up in the mysterious city called Zalem; this motivated Alita to travel upward and swore to destroy Nova. The movie ended with Alita embarking on a quest, rising to become a Motorball champion so she could climb upwards.
Rodriguez said Nova was a tough cast and his presence in the movie is like for the setup of a sequel. They also chose Norton as they reportedly wanted to make sure the small, non-speaking role will be filled by someone they wanted to work with on the theoretical Alita: Battle Angel 2.
Meanwhile, Clive Lee was supposed to be on the original script, but it was cut. The director admitted they've figured they should save him for a sequel. Clearly, with all of these hints, it's possible fans can expect a sequel of Alita: Battle Angel. But for now, they need to wait for a while until the release date is announced.
