Fans of the favorite Sleeping Beauty villain have the chance to see her on the big screen sooner than later as Maleficent 2 gets an earlier release date. Walt Disney also drops the film's new poster, revealing its official title and giving the first glimpse to Angelina Jolie's iconic character.
Maleficent 2 full poster revealed its official title, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. It showed the silhouette of Angelina Jolie's character as she returned to tell the dark side of Disney's legendary fairy tale. It also carried the movie's new release date, which will be October 18.
Maleficent 2 is originally set to release in May 2020. But from the looks of it, fans are going to see Angelina Jolie back on the big screen seven months earlier than expected.
According to Variety, the new Maleficent 2 release date will make it pit against the untitled movie from the known horror-maker Blumhouse. On its second weekends, it will go against the animated movie The Addams Family, Donna Tartt's The Goldfinch, Zombieland 2, and Will Smith and Ang Lee's futuristic reunion film Gemini Man. If it is out on its original date in May 2020, it should have gone against the second week of Fast & Furious 9 and The Spongebob Movie.
Meanwhile, aside from Angelina Jolie, Elle Fanning will also return on Maleficent 2 as Princess Aurora. Fans will see the comeback of Sam Riley as Diaval, Imelda Staunton as Knotgrass, Juno Temple as Thistletwit, and Lesley Manville as Flittle. New faces will also come to the film as Michelle Pfeiffer joins the cast as Queen Ingrith, while Chiwetel Ejiofor and Deadpool's Ed Skrein's characters remain unknown.
Gizmodo reported Maleficent 2 would feature a time jump as it would pick up the first movie's events several years later. Fans already know what made Maleficent's heart hard as a stone that drove her to curse Princess Aurora when she was still a baby. The film would continuously explore her complex relationship with the soon-to-be Queen as they form new alliances. They are also set to face new enemies as they struggle to protect the moors and the magical creatures that live within.
So once again, fans will see Angelina Jolie's return to the big screen on Maleficent 2, officially titled Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, on October 18. The first film was a box office hit with $758.5 million earnings globally with only $180 million budget. The sequel is expected to do the same, if not surpass its record.
