Despite being off the air for almost four years, Hannibal season 4 revival talks apparently continue. The series starring Mads Mikkelsen as the mad psychologist Hannibal Lecter could still be back once it closes a deal with a new home.
In an interview with Bloody Disgusting, Mikkelsen implied that there are still active conversations between the show creator, Bryan Fuller, and a potential platform. Mikkelsen, however, said that while he doesn't know the specifics, he's aware that Fuller has never stopped coming up with ideas for Hannibal season 4.
NBC canceled the series in 2015 but popular streaming platforms Netflix and Amazon did not pick up the series, despite fans hoping Hannibal season 4 could continue elsewhere. In 2017, Fuller hinted that revival talks have begun when he posted a photo with his meeting with the show's producers on Twitter.
Apparently, they couldn't actually begin talking about bringing back Hannibal season 4 until two years have passed since its cancellation. Fuller also revealed that they couldn't get the show on Netflix and Amazon because of their streaming contracts with NBC.
Hannibal was initially planned for a seven-season run, which would eventually include the adaptations of sourcebook materials like The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal. Thomas Harris wrote and published these books in the 1980s, which were adopted on the big screen with Sir Anthony Hopkins playing Hannibal Lecter.
Fuller also said in previous interviews that the main cast is still on board a revival of Hannibal season 4. However, as it's still a long way to production, Mikkelsen, Hugh Dancy (as Will Graham) and Gillian Anderson (as Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier) have been busy with different projects.
Mikkelsen has been in the cast of blockbuster films like Doctor Strange and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. His Netflix film Polar was also recently released on the platform.
Dancy, on the other hand, has starred on shows like The Path and Robot Chicken. He will soon be seen on the Amazon comedy series Late Night with Emma Thompson and Mindy Kaling to be out later this year.
Anderson has had a lot of TV projects since Hannibal folded. She starred in The Fall, American Gods, the revival of The X-Files and the newly-released Netflix series Sex Education. The actress will also be playing former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in The Crown season 4 set for a 2020 release.
After Hannibal, Fuller became the showrunner of series like Star Trek: Discovery and American Gods. However, he left these projects before the programs aired on CBS All Access and Starz.
