The cannabidiol (CBD), scientific name Cannabis sativa, is now gaining its name in the medical world. Though it gives the sensation of being "high" and is also linked to marijuana, people are now using it for many different reasons.
A trusted online health blog the Health Line shared ways on how CBD oil can be used. According to the blog, cannabidiol is very effective in relieving body pains, reducing depression and anxiety, reducing acne, alleviating cancer-related symptoms, and also providing neuroprotective properties.
With the increasing demand for CBD oil in the market, many are getting quite curious about its effectiveness, efficiency, and safety. What do the experts have to say about it? Is the oil worth the risk?
Two scientists, who are Dr. Esther Blessing, an associate professor of psychiatry at New York University, and Margaret Haney, professor of neurobiology at Columbia University Medical Center and director of the university's Marijuana Research Laboratory, were both interviewed by Time to dig deeper into the issue. Based on scientific evidence, both agreed that CBD oil indeed has the potential to improve and heal the body.
One of the most well-known CBD used in the market at present is Epidiolex, the first FDA-approved cannabis-derived drug. Ever since the Food and Drug Administration had approved it in June 2018, people have already been using it to ease health conditions such as rare childhood seizure syndromes.
Unfortunately, though an increasing number of people are already using it, experts reveal that science still don't have a lot of information about the drug especially when it comes to its effects. Though there are situations and testimonies of its effectiveness in easing muscle pains, scientists still don't know whether or not its long-term effects are good.
Meanwhile, not all CBD oils are regulated by the FDA or the government. As a matter of fact, there are oils that can be easily purchased through online and other unregistered shops. Experts warned not to purchase from these shops since its products don't have any assurance that it contains only pure and safe ingredients. People who are purchasing and using CBD oils bought from unauthorized shops are "just throwing their money away," Haney explains.
As of writing, there are only a few legit companies that are producing CBD oils despite its demand from the market. "It's unfortunate that there aren't many options for consumers to ensure that CBD they buy is safe - or even has any CBD in it," Blessing added.
