A new report alleges that Apple is going to release two totally new iPhone models that boast of a major feature that can be considered a first for the Cupertino tech company.
Apple is expected to release successors to the iPhone XR, XS and XS Max anytime this year. With the current models considered as "S" versions of the previous model, the iPhone X, it's natural for people to expect that the next would be the iPhone XI.
Mashable reports that certain rumors simply expect Apple to upgrade the existing lineup. A new report from tech-savvy Japan claims that for 2019, however, the Cupertino-based tech company is going to release two entirely-new models that will feature the highly rumored triple-camera setup.
The report, coming from Japanese Apple blogsite Mac Otakara (via 9To5Mac), cites unnamed sources from Apple's supply chain in China. It said the two new models will feature 6.1-inch and 6.5-inch OLED displays. The two devices are believed to feature a three-camera setup, which has been rumored for some time now.
Apple is said to adjust the new iPhones' chassis to make way for the new triple-camera setup. This way, the phones will not need to be very thick. The 6.1-incher, for example, is said to be 0.15mm thicker than the current iPhone XS, but the camera bump will be about 0.5mm thinner.
The 6.5-incher, on the other hand, will be 0.4mm thicker than the iPhone XS, but the camera bump will be 0.25mm thinner. Based on these calculations, the 6.5-inch 2019 iPhone will only be 0.2mm thicker than the iPhone XS Max.
The report says the new iPhones will come with an 18W USB fast charger, along with a USB-C to Lightning cable in the box. The new iPhones will feature bilateral wireless charging, which enables them to charge Qi-compatible devices like a wireless powerbank.
Odd
Aside from revealing that two new models are in the works, the report also suggests that Apple is planning on giving a specs bump to the iPhone XR and XS.
The report seems odd for a few reasons. For one, Apple is known to release only a few good models per year. If the report is true, this will be the first time they will release at least four new iPhones.
Yet, although the report might seem odd, Mac Otakara has had a proven track record when it comes to Apple information, which means the report might prove to be true in future. Until then, it's best to take the news with a grain of salt.
