Sugar is one of the ingredients commonly used in our kitchen. May it be used for baking cakes, creating pastries, making beverages, or grilling barbeques, sugar is always a perfect tool to complete the recipes of our everyday meal. Unfortunately, though sugar is considered a household necessity, this sweetener is also considered as one of the silent killers in the world.
An online health blog named Health Line shared one important reason why sugar isn't a good deal for one's health. According to one of its post, sugar is full of carbohydrates that can cause a person to gain weight. Once left unmanaged and uncontrolled, this health situation could eventually lead to more serious diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
Given this reason, people search for healthier alternatives they could use instead of sugar. Some of those they found are stevia, maple sugar, coconut sugar, agave nectar, and most especially honey.
Honey, according to science, has already been existing in this world about 200 million years ago, way before people have learned about it. Nowadays, people have already used it for so many purposes such as for beauty, baking, or even for cooking.
One of the reasons a lot of people are patronizing honey is its benefits. Some of those are: it contains several nutrients our body needs to survive, pure and natural honey has antioxidants, can help manage blood pressure, improves cholesterol levels and triglycerides, and it also has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties.
Despite other's claims of its benefits, there are some who are still unsure whether honey is really healthy or not. To clarify this, Jenny Friedman, a Philadelphia-based registered dietitian, shared an important thing every person who is fond of using honey should know. That is "consuming a lot of honey means consuming a lot of calories" too, she added.
Also, honey is still considered sugar by science. Though it has more benefits than sugar, the expert says it can still increase the body's glucose rate. This is the reason why it is still considered dangerous especially once consumed in excess amounts, as reported by TIME.
"A lot of people feel better when they read a food label and see honey instead of sugar", Friedman shared. "However, in the long run, the nuance is more meaningful to the mind than the body", she shared.
So, how should we consume honey? Experts advise people to consume honey in moderation. Usually, a tablespoon-full of honey has about 64 calories and 17 grams of sugar, but some have higher since there are others that have added sugar in it. That's why it is better to choose locally produced honey instead of the latter to make sure its purity.
