Trixie (played by Helen George) has a challenging patient to take care of in Call the Midwife season 8 episode 5. The show, which was originally set in the 1950s, will be featuring its first intersex character.

An intersex, previously called a hermaphrodite, is someone who was born with both male and female sex organs. In Call the Midwife season 8 episode 5, a young woman will be diagnosed as having male genitalia after telling the nurses that she has never experienced having a period.

But she will have a lot more to deal with as she learns that she will never be able to get pregnant because of her condition. This will devastate the young woman, as well as her fiancé, as their dreams of starting a family will be shattered.

"The young woman discovers on the eve of her marriage that she has what doctors then called 'Testicular Feminisation Syndrome,'" Call the Midwife head writer and creator Heidi Thomas told The Sun. "That isn't just a medical story; it's a question of identity."

What this means is that she has a pair of testicles in place of her ovaries. Devastated by the diagnosis, the young woman will break off her engagement and tear up her beautiful wedding dress before she does something horrible in Call the Midwife season 8 episode 5. Fortunately, she has great nurses at Nonnatus, and her story is set for a happy ending.

Meanwhile, the other storyline in Call the Midwife season 8 episode 5 involves a pregnant woman whose husband experiences the same symptoms of her pain, according to PBS. Their story will deal with the mysteries of sympathetic pregnancy as the woman goes into labor and gives birth to a healthy baby.

Call the Midwife season 8 episode 5 will also delve on a new cervical smear test that has yet to be introduced in the market. Will the women of Poplar be willing to get tested or will their response be similar to turnout for the measles vaccine?

Meanwhile, Call the Midwife will still have more stories to tell as it has received a renewal for season 9 through 11 on BBC and PBS, as per Deadline. The next installment is slated to air in the U.K. in late 2019 while viewers in America will be able to watch the ninth season sometime in spring 2020, as it's usually the case.

Call the Midwife season 9 will take place in 1965. However, it's unclear for now what controversial or groundbreaking women's health issues will be tackled in the upcoming storylines. BBC will likely have more announcements about the new season by summer.
