Fans have been waiting for the return of Alex Godman (James Norton) in McMafia Season 2 after the previous season's major cliffhanging finale. The show closed with an open-ending, as the new season might continue to feature his new position as a top mafioso.
Alex used to be an investment-banker before he became a mafioso. After he brokered a big deal that would flood the European markets, McMafia Season 2 might continue his story as he tries to match other mafia bosses' ranks in Europe.
Alex will make his way to be a powerful figure in the world of organized crime in McMafia Season 2. Based on Misha Glenny's non-fiction book with the same title, creators Hossein Amini and James Watkins might take a new direction to tell a different story.
Amini and Watkins might feature the modern face of the mafia today in McMafia Season 2. They could also take a fresh chapter from Glenny's book to tell a brand new tale.
"I just wanted this series to go down well with people, and then we'll see where we head," Watkins said about McMafia Season 2, via Radio Times. "We are so thrilled with how McMafia has resonated with audiences across the world and are delighted to be given the opportunity to cast more light on the shady intersections of transnational criminals and their enablers in finance, law, intelligence agencies and even in governments."
Although BBC has yet to announce McMafia Season 2's official casting after it renewed the show, Norton might be back to reprise his role as Alex. If the new installment would pick-up where the previous season ended, there is a big possibility that he would return.
Express.co.uk reported Juliet Rylance might also return in McMafia Season 2 as Alex's girlfriend Rebecca Harper. Other stars that might be seen in the show are Aleksey Serebryakov as father Dimitri Godman, Maria Shukshina as mother Oksana Godman and Faye Marsay as sister Katya Godman. But if the new season would tell a different story, BBC might introduce new faces that would be part of the series.
The network also has yet to reveal McMafia Season 2 release date, as there are reports the production might be delayed. Shukshina earlier revealed the show's filming might start in winter 2018, although there was no confirmation about it until this time.
BBC has yet to comment about the delay. Anyhow, as the first season ended in April 2018, there are strong assumptions McMafia Season 2 would be out this year.
