After a very surprising season 3 finale, Fox canceled Star Season 4, may be due to its low ratings. After the show ended with a major cliffhanger with Ruby's (Juanita Jennings) death and other's lives hanging in the balance, would there be no chance for a renewal?

Season 3 finale, "When the Levee Breaks," made everyone emotional by showing Ruby's special moment with her grandson Derek (Quincy Brown) before she died. She got into a tense standoff with her dead rapist's associates, who wanted to avenge their fellow gangster's demise.

After she recited Psalm 12, she dared them to shoot her, which they did. In other Season 3 finale events, Olivia (Kayla Smith) appeared on Derek (Quincy Brown) and Alex's (Ryan Destiny) wedding to ruin their big day, per TV Guide. But no matter how hard she tried, she didn't win.

However, Bankhead gang members later emerged and opened fire to everyone, including Cassie (Brandy), Angel (Evan Ross), and Mateo (William Levy). Also, Star (Jude Demorest) and Noah (Luke James) decided to raise their son together, but the kid was kidnapped.

Season 3 finale ended with a lot of loose ends that should have been tied in Star Season 4. However, Fox decided not to continue the Empire companion series due to unknown reasons.

According to TV Line, Season 3 only had an average of 3.5 million and a 1.06 demo rating in Live+Same Day numbers. The total was lower compared to Season 2's 4.1 million and 1.3 average demo rating. The show also hit its all-time low on May 1.

Star Season 4's cancellation comes a week after Fox renewed its sister drama, Empire, for Season 6, despite the controversy surrounding the extension of Jussie Smollett's contract. But, there is no confirmation yet if he will be back in the series. The network also canceled several shows like The Passage, Lethal Weapon, and The Cool Kids.

Created by Lee Daniels and Tom Donaghy, Star Season 4 should be the continuation of Daniels' two musical drama series on Fox. He is also the one who created Empire, Variety noted.

Aside from being Star creator, he was also the show's executive producer, along with Pamela Oas Williams, and Karin Gist. The latter was also its showrunner. The series was produced by 20th Century Fox Television in collaboration with Lee Daniels Entertainment.

So far, Fox has yet to comment about Star Season 4's cancellation. So, fans may wait and see if any network or even Netflix will pick-up the show to continue.
