Constance Wu seemingly dissed on her show Fresh Off The Boat's renewal on social media, then later backtracked and apologized for her crude words, but FOTB fans remain unappeased.
The actress, who plays Jessica Huang in ABC's comedy series Fresh Off The Boat, went trending on Twitter Friday. This was when an ill-timed post of hers, which reflected her being very upset over something, coincided with the announcement that her show was being picked up for yet another season.
The Richmond, Virginia native originally tweeted that she was "upset" at that moment, so much that she admitted she was "literally" crying. Then she made a negative expletive, "f**k" and yet again "f**king hell."
Despite the negative outburst, a fan offered congratulations on the recently reported renewal of her Fresh Off The Boat series, saying it was "great news." Surprisingly to many, the 37-year-old actress commented, "No it's not."
While social media fans were stunned and confused over this reaction, Wu posted another message, explaining that her earlier reactions were "not a rampage," clarifying that it was "normally" the way she talked, claiming she said "f**k" a lot because it was apparently a word she "loved."
The actress tried to accuse fans for "making" many assumptions regarding what she had said. She said outright that her words were not about her show. She even criticized commenters for "assuming."
When the situation began to get out of hand, Wu decided to be more conciliatory, deciding to put it all down to having had a "rough day" and that basically her comments, which were "ill-timed," had come out just as her show was given another run.
She had become very apologetic and shared she was really "grateful" over the renewal of Fresh Off The Boat. She also said that she cared about the "cast and crew" and that she was "proud" to be part of it all.
As for the fans, one commented that Wu had clearly written the comment "dislike" and obviously referred to the news not being a good one, at least not for her. The commenter suggested that perhaps Wu had been counting on the show getting canceled, but later backtracked.
One suggested that the Crazy Rich Asians starrer could be on the verge of getting "reprimanded, fired, or sued" which could have been why she was upset.
Another social media user expressed puzzlement over the actress' "dislike" comment on the renewal, expressing her opinion that the actress had a "good movie role" but must feel she was just "too good" for it.
Then a solid fan who confessed to loving Wu and FOTB shared that she had gotten wind of some speculation that the "original creator" was "pushed out." No one on the cast apparently agreed with the new "direction" that Fresh Off the Boat was going.
A discerning fan summed it all up by commenting that the story appeared like Wu was upset at having Fresh Off The Boat renewed as she may have had other things lined up but "can't get out" of her agreement.
The same commenter went on to say that, perhaps word of her reaction had reached "her publicist," who may have advised her to "retract" what she had said. This was so, the fan suggested, Wu could "make" people believe they were "crazy" for the assumption after Wu very "clearly said" what she meant.
Obviously, some damage control was due and that Wu had to do something to clear up the mess she created. Some are of the opinion this could negatively affect the upcoming sixth season's reception with the show's audience and fans.
Wu posted on her social media her lengthy explanation of what she had gone through and why she had let go of the statements on social media. None of her co-stars have had the opportunity to comment on her posts, but Wu admitted in her Twitter statement that she loved the show and enjoyed doing it.
She went on to say that she had been "temporarily upset" because she had to let go of "another project" which she felt "passionate about." Wu cleared the air and apologized, saying she regretted her words were not "nice."
