The AMD Radeon Navi RX 5700 GPU last earlier this week at Computex 2019 is set to power AMD RX 5700 graphics cards. Today, it is confirmed that the recently unveiled product is, in fact, a mid-range variant with a die area of around 255 square millimeters only. The AMD Radeon Navi RX 5700 GPU could be compared to the previous products released by the company in its mid-range product category.
This includes the AMD Polaris 10 or the AMD RX 480/580 with a die area of 232 square millimeters only. The AMD Radeon Navi RX 5700 GPU is also similar to the Pitcairn series as well as to the popular AMD RV770. Compared to NVIDIA, the AMD RTX 2070 is fueled by the massive TU-106-400 GPU with a chip size of approximately 445 square millimeters.

The Navi RX 5700 series GPU, which will be powered by AMD Radeon Navi RX 5700 GPU are much smaller compared to the TU116 that powers NVIDIA's GTX 1660 series GPUs. This difference in terms of die area or chip size is because of the graphics architecture of the AMD Navi GPUS. These are developed in the groundbreaking 7nm FinFET technology process.
This technology is almost a full node advanced than the 12nm technology that NVIDIA Turing chips are made upon. The mid-range AMD Navi RX 5700 series GPUS are anticipated to go head to head with the massive TU106 that powers the RTX 2070 as well as the RTX 2060 GPUs from NVIDIA.
It is worth noting that AMD demonstrated the early version of its Navi series leaving behind the RTX 2070 by 10 percent when it comes to performance. This simply means that at present we are witnessing two electronics and semiconductor giants using their powerful products, which are the AMD Navi RX 5700 and NVIDIA's RTX 2070 trading blows against each other.
It is interesting to see AMD publicly teasing that the Radeon RX 5700 to be a high-end product with high price tags. But, if you look at the consumers' reaction, you will notice that a high pricing strategy will not really work well with AMD. This is because the performance of both the RTX 2070 is not that great enough especially that the Turing is already out in the market.
The only approach that AMD Navi RX 5700 GPUs can do is to deliver a significantly meaningful performance in the market if it is indeed a mid-range GPU. Also, if this is the case, AMD should give AMD Navi RX 5700 the price of a mid-range GPU.
