American Princess is a new TV comedy and drama series which premiered on the cable channel Lifetime on Sunday, June 2, at 10:00 p.m. Created by Ghostbuster 2016 writer Jamie Denbo and produced by GLOW and Orange is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan, this royal drama may be the next new guilty pleasure for viewers.
Focusing on a young socialite from the Upper East Side, American Princess stars Georgia Flood as Amanda. She has been planning her fairy tale wedding in New York when she learned, just hours before her big day, that her fiancé has been cheating on her.
Heartbroken, Amanda decides to take a break in the countryside, in the middle of a Renaissance Faire without any phone or an immediate way to get back home. When Amanda learns that her life has been tabloid fodder on American Princes, she decides, albeit with some discomfort, to stay in the countryside for a longer period so that she could evaluate her life.
Lifetime ordered the series in 2017, as per Deadline. The show will have 10 episodes in its first season. The show was supposed to originally air on the History Channel before Lifetime took over.
According to Paste Magazine, the premise of American Princess might seem ridiculous, and it doesn't have a deep storyline. However, this absurdity is apparently what will make viewers stay glued to the show. It's a great escape for viewers looking for something campy to watch this summer.
Meanwhile, American Princess is Flood's debut on U.S. television, but she has been a TV star in Australia for a few years now, starring in shows like Wentworth and Home and Away. The actress said in press interviews that she resonates with her character on the Lifetime series.
"She wants to do the right thing by people," the actress relayed to Bustle. "Even if she misses when she hits, she tries again, and she doesn't give up. She wants to be free and all these things that resonate with me."
Flood is joined by Lucas Neff (as David) on American Princess, who starred in the FOX comedy Raising Hope. Seana Kofoed (as Maggie) is also in the cast, and she previously worked on shows like The Mentalist and Men in Trees. The rest of the main cast includes Mary Hollis Inboden (as Delilah) and Rory O'Malley (as Brian).
American Princess will run weekly episodes on Lifetime in the U.S. on Sunday nights this summer.
