SWATseason 3 is beefing up its casting slate as the show is reportedly looking to add a new female character to work with the team. The character, named Detective Lynch, has the potential to be a series regular.
According to TV Line, Detective Lynch is a homicide cop with some unorthodox methods. Her working style will either annoy or bewilder the rest of the SWAT unit. Further details to this casting, however, are still unavailable. However, will this character's addition edge out Jessica Cortez (played by Stephanie Sigman) in SWAT season 3?
Jessica hinted in the SWAT season 2 finale that she will be joining this new training program. While this is good for about five weeks, it could essentially change Jessica's options in many ways that she may decide not to return to her old team in SWAT season 3.
For now, however, there are no reports that Sigman has left the series. The actress has categorically acknowledged on Twitter that she's still part of SWAT season 3.
CBS has renewed SWAT season 3 in May, and the network has also set its return this fall in its usual Wednesday 10:00 p.m. schedule, per Entertainment Weekly. By late July or early August, CBS is expected to announce the third season's premiere date.
Filming for SWAT season 3 has not yet begun, but the writers have gone back to work in the writers' room as of the end of May. Production will likely begin sometime in July.
SWAT premiered on CBS in 2017, and it is based on the 1975 TV series. Developed by Shawn Ryan and Aaron Rahsaan Thomas, the rebooted cop drama is led by former Criminal Minds star Shemar Moore as Sgt. Daniel Hondo Harrelson.
The show also stars Alex Russell as Officer Jim Street, Lina Esco as Officer Chris Alonso, Kenny Johnson as Officer Dominique Luca, Jay Harrington as Sgt. David Deacon Kay, Peter Onorati as Sgt. Jeff Mumford and Patrick St. Esprit as Commander Robert Hicks. Ratings for the show has been quite a success with an average viewership of 8.5 million per week.
SWAT has done something significantly different for this rebooted show from the original series as it has introduced a shared universe with The Shield, which Ryan created. It ran on FX from 2002 to 2008.
