A major surprise at Nintendo's E3 presentation is the announcement that it's working on a sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for the Nintendo Switch. A short teaser was then shown, which featured the return of the iterations of both Zelda and Link from the previous title.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was released alongside the Switch, and has since became one of the most acclaimed games of all time. A confirmation of a sequel is definitely good news, and that even is an understatement.
There's scant information about this new Breath of the Wild game, so we may end up waiting until E3 2020 to see it in action before it actually launches. However, we do know that it's a full game and not simply DLC, and that it's coming to the Nintendo Switch, as opposed to the rumored Nintendo Switch 2.
It'll be the second flagship Zelda title on the console, not counting the Link's Awakening remake. Breath of the Wild 2 (as we're calling it for now) appears to follow on from the original game that launched with the Switch on March 3, 2017.
The trailer for upcoming Breath of the Wild sequel is merely 82 seconds long. There's no dialogue whatsoever, but we like to think Nintendo hid some clues in there.
It features a torch-carrying Link and Zelda traversing a dark dungeon beneath Hyrule (no big surprise there). Spirit-like tendrils creep around the musty tomb they're exploring, with the pair riding a large elephant-like beast. Something shocks the pair, and then we cut to what appears to be the resurrection of some long-dead (and creepy looking) warrior. Could this be the return of Gannondorf?
The video then cuts to a long shot of Hyrule Field, with Hyrule Castle in the distance. There's a tremor, the castle is smothered with dust... and that's the end. The clip finishes with a message that reads: "The sequel to Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is in development."
And that's pretty much it. For now, that's all we know about the sequel to the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and that it's going to release at some point that is not now. It could take quite a while. Still, it's great news.
