"Dota Underlords" recently registered more than 200,00 concurrent players, this made it the fourth most played game in Steam based on number of online players. This puts the game just below "Dota 2," "PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds," and "CounterStrike: Global Offensive."
During its historic run, the game's player counts hang around the 180,000 mark. This made placed it on top of other popular titles such as "Grand Theft Auto V" and "Rainbow Six Siege." This is not exactly a surprising note as the game's original mod, "Dota Auto Chess," peaked at around the 200,000 concurrent player and a record of eight million subscribers in total.
"Dota Underlords" is a mod of "Dota Auto Chess," which itself is a mod of the popular MOBA game "Dota 2." "Dota Auto Chess" was just released in January and it has one of the fastest growing player base in the online platform Steam. Valve quickly capitalized on this popularity and developed its own standalone game which was eventually known as "Dota Underlords."
This popularity of "Dota Underlords" undermined that of "Artifact," Valve's attempt to create a card game spin-off of "Dota 2." The game did enjoyed quite an early success, reaching upwards of 200,000 concurrent users at one time. However, the gaming community quickly abandoned the game and now it only registers less than 100 active players daily.
Gaming insiders have noted that while 200,00 is not at all a great number, it is important to note that this only covers players that are playing the game on the Steam platform. Once "Dota Underlords" get traction on the massive mobile platform, players are expected to swarm the game by the millions.
As of this writing, the game is available on the iOS and Android platforms albeit only as a beta. This means that Valve is nearly finished with the full game and maybe just doing some final polishing and gameplay balances. As of this writing, the game has been download more than 500,000 times in just three days. This figure is based on the official statistics from the Google Play store. This figure could easily reach the million mark once Apple releases download data from its iOS store.
Experts are predicting that "Dota Underlords" will be a huge success, right in the tracks of massive games like "Hearthstone." Despite being based on the "Dota 2" game, it features a completely different gameplay that is both refreshing and engaging to players.
