Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo have shocked their avid fans again after the actor filed for divorce on Wednesday, June 27. Split rumors hounded the former Descendants of the Sun lead stars for quite some time now. However, the endless speculations came into reality just recently.
For starters, Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo announced their plans to wed sometime in July 2017 after several months of dating secretly. The former couple first sparked dating rumors after they appeared on the 2016-hit SBS television series Descendants of the Sun. At first, they denied the reports saying that they are an item.
On Oct. 31, 2017, Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo tied the knot in Shilla Hotel in Seoul City, South Korea. The Hallyu stars' wedding was attended with various A-list stars in the country, including their close pals, relatives, and family members. Baby rumors made rounds a few days after their wedding. However, the two South Korean superstars have remained tightlipped about their plans to build their own family until their divorce was confirmed.
Almost two years since they exchanged wedding vows, Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo decided to end their marriage. Attorney Park Jae Hyun, who is Joong Ki's lawyer, was the person who relayed that his client has taken legal steps for the separation already. Joong Ki, then, released an official statement after that.
"I have begun the process of filing for divorce from Song Hye Kyo. Rather than denouncing one another and arguing over who is to blame, I hope that the divorce process can be wrapped up amicably," Song Joong Ki stated in his official statement. "I ask for your understanding in regards to the fact that it is difficult to discuss the details of my personal life, and I will recover from my current wounds and do my utmost as an actor to repay you through great productions in the future," the Arthdal Chronicles lead star went on.
Following the release of Song Joong Ki's statement, the agency of Song Hye Kyo also made an official pronouncement regarding the divorce news. "We find it unfortunate that we are greeting you with unhappy news. After careful consideration, actress Song Hye Kyo and her husband are taking the first steps toward a divorce," Hye Kyo's agency stated. "The reason [for the divorce] is differences in personality, and because the two were unable to overcome their differences, they were forced to come to this decision," it went on.
Based on their respective statements, fans concluded that Song Joong Ki and Song Hye Kyo's marriage could have been hitting rock bottom for a long time already. There were even rumors saying that Joong Ki and Hye Kyo were not on good terms since the start of the year. However, the two have been debunking the divorce speculations over and over again.
At the moment, Joong Ki has decided to take a temporary hiatus from the limelight as he mourns on the sad news. Hye Kyo, on the other hand, is, currently, back in South Korea after spending a few days in Thailand for a shoot. Devoted supporters of the former couple have been expressing their disappointment and frustration about the sudden split.
