Former England international Jamie Carragher recently said that he still wants Liverpool to re-sign Philippe Coutinho. Carragher said that he has talked to Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp about the matter and that he is expecting a positive response.
Coutinho currently plays for Spanish La Liga club F.C. Barcelona, and he is widely considered to be on the transfer block. The 27-year-old Brazilian international is considered as one of the best midfielders in the league, and he is seen as a valuable asset for any club.
Coutinho played an integral role in Barcelona's last two La Liga titles. He was also an important piece of the squad when they won the Copa del Rey. While some might say that Coutinho is an extremely valuable asset for Barcelona to take him out on a deal, there are rumors claiming that he is looking for a return to Liverpool this summer.
As a former Liverpool captain, Carragher has nothing but praises for Coutinho. Regarding the Brazilian's return to Anfield, Carragher said, "I said it before, I'd love to see Liverpool bring back Coutinho back if that was possible in any way. Obviously, it hasn't worked out for him at Barcelona."
As for the transfer, Klopp recently said that he is looking into the terms of the transfer and whether the club has enough resources to facilitate such transfers. Klopp added that he is studying possible deals should the club decide to pursue re-signing Coutinho.
Coutinho left Liverpool for Barcelona in 2018 in a massive transfer deal worth £142 million. This simply highlights how valuable the Brazilian star is. If Liverpool is bent into re-acquiring their former star, they have to shell out a lot of cash since Barcelona appears to have intentions of keeping the midfielder.
Despite Carragher's enthusiasm, there are rumors claiming that Liverpool might not be that interested in re-acquiring Coutinho after all. Some analysts have said that while Coutinho did help Barcelona win some titles, he was not as valuable as Carragher perceive him to be.
Considering Liverpool's current squad, re-acquiring could spell a lot of trouble and conflicts with player rotation. As of this writing, Liverpool has Adam Lallana and Xherdan Shaqiri playing the middle and the wing, the same positions that Coutinho is playing. Should he decide to return back to Anfield, Klopp will be hard-pressed into choosing who he will play in these particular positions. This might create tension and conflicts within the club and with the players.
