The 100 season 7 is happening! The CW has renewed the series ahead of its sixth season premiere in April and was announced by showrunner Jason Rothenberg on his social media pages.

Production for The 100 season 7 has started in June. Rothenberg once again confirmed in a post on Twitter that they have returned on the set to work on the new season.

The 100 season 7 will have three extra episodes at 16 compared to the previous seasons 13-episode releases. Speculations are that this extended episode order could mean that this will be the final season of the series.

In an interview with Collider, Rothenberg said that The 100 is not set up to have endless runs. Thus, the upcoming season could be its finale.

"It's a miracle that it's still as good as it is, after all of this time, and a lot of that is because of the procedural engine," Rothenberg said. "Here, it's purely serialist storytelling, so eventually you want to wrap that up in a way that's satisfying. You want there to be an ending that feels satisfying, and the longer you push that out, the harder it is to get that landing to stick."

The CW has not yet announced the premiere date for The 100 season 7. However, it's likely that it will follow the same path as the last seasons when it premiered during the spring. So, fans could expect the upcoming installment to be ready by April 2020.

Meanwhile, Rothenberg also said that The 100 season 7 is part of the second book that he has started in season 6. This means that the current season's ending, which will air in a couple of weeks, is going to end with a cliffhanger.

The showrunner has plotted what's going to happen in The 100 season 7 as he was making the sixth season. His creative ideas have revitalized the show, which pleased The CW bosses.

As for which cast member is returning on The 100 season 7, it's still pretty clear at this point as there have been shocking deaths in season 6 so far. However, Eliza Taylor's character, Clarke Griffin, has an exciting storyline that will likely need another season to be fleshed out. Also expected to return is Bob Morley (as Bellamy Blake) but the rest of the cast's status won't be known until the season 6 finale.
