Anyone who has seen the trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was undoubtedly moved by Luke Skywalker's dialogue that seemed to be addressed to Rey as she prepared to take on Kylo Ren and his TIE Fighter. However, a new theory suggests that the Jedi Master might be speaking to a completely different person in Star Wars Episode 9. Is it possible that the trailer confirmed the true hero of the highly anticipated movie? Was Luke actually referring to Kylo Ren as the one person who can save everyone from the First Order?
In the Star Wars Episode 9 trailer, Luke Skywalker says that "we've passed on all we know," telling Rey that "a thousand generations live in you now." The words conveniently fit the sequence considering that it looks like Rey is both nervous and ready to take on an opponent that turns out to be Kylo Ren in a TIE Fighter. On the other hand, most movie trailers have always served as a form of misdirection to what will happen in the film. With that in mind, some believe that Luke isn't actually talking to Rey at all.
A new theory suggests that Luke Skywalker's Force ghost has actually made a connection with Kylo Ren and is trying to guide him back into the Light Side. Considering that Kylo is one of the strongest Force users who happens to have real Jedi training, it would make sense that Luke is referring to him. Interestingly, this would mean that Ben Solo is actually the true Skywalker who is destined to bring Balance to the Force. After all, Episode 9 is set to be the final movie in the Skywalker Saga so it would make sense for the prophecy to finally be fulfilled.
The theory further purports that Luke Skywalker's last dialogue in the trailer is also addressed to Kylo Ren. "We'll always be with you," Luke says, adding that "no one's ever really gone." This is immediately followed by Emperor Sheev Palpatine's sinister laughter, teasing the possibility that it is Kylo who will face the villain in The Rise of Skywalker. But could this mean that Kylo will finally be confirmed as the true Skywalker only to be killed in the end?
It's certainly an interesting twist to what fans are already looking forward to in Star Wars Episode 9. However, it is important to point out that this is still based on theory so it's best to take it with a grain of salt.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20.
