A divorce is now an option for couples who wanted to live their lives separately. It is now a trend in modern society even among royals. Many members of the royal family went through a controversial divorce before settling down with their real-life partners.

Prince Charles divorce with the Princess of Wales, Diana Spencer, is one of the most controversial. The couple's fairytale wedding happened in 1981. Despite their luxurious marriage, their marriage ended due to incompatibility. Charles divorced the princess in 1997, more than a decade after their marriage.

Another popular royal who went through a divorce is Meghan Markle. She was married to the movie producer Trevor Engelson in 2011 before taking the title as the Duchess of Sussex when she married Prince Harry. Her marriage with Engelson lasted for two years.

When Diana and Charles separated, the Prince married Camilla Parker Bowles. Camilla is now the current Duchess of Cornwall. But before her marriage with the Prince, she was first married to Andrew Parker Bowles. Their marriage also ended in divorce. Camilla and Charles were married through a civil ceremony. Her Majesty failed to attend the wedding.

Wallis Simpson, the Duchess of Windsor and the wife of former King Edward VIII, is also included on the list of royals who went through a divorce. King Edward chose her over the crown. The Church of England was against the marriage so the King chose to give up the throne to his brother George VI, the father of Queen Elizabeth II.

Wallis was married twice before she was married to the King. Her first husband is Win Spencer followed by Ernest Simpson. It was her divorced status to two living husbands that made the Church hesitant with their union. It was Wallis who paved the way for his younger brother to become King and for his oldest daughter to be the longest-reigning monarch in England. Prince Charles and Prince William need to thank her because they were given the right to be King.

Princess Margaret, Her Majesty's sibling also went through a divorce. She was married to the photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones in May of 1960. She met him after the sad end of her relationship with Captain Peter Townsend. They were once considered as Britain's most glamorous couple. According to Katie Frost, Antony was the first commoner to marry a King's daughter. Their marriage, however, ended on divorce in 1978 after almost 20 years of marriage.
