The mobile gaming platform is once again rocked by a new and powerful system-on-chip from MediaTek. Dubbed simply as the Helio G90 and the Helio G90T chipsets, these two pieces of hardware are expected to be at the heart of some of the most powerful gaming smartphones within the foreseeable future.
MediaTek's new platform sports an octa-core processor, this is getting more common in the gaming market nowadays. Two of the eight cores are ARM Cortex-A76 processors, while the remaining six are Cortex-A55 processors handle the graphics processing of the powerful Mali-G76 graphics unit.
Both the Helio G90 and G90T variants are manufactured using the TSMC 12nm FinFET process and can reach clock speeds of up to 2.05GHz. MediaTek had a breakthrough with these two new chipsets as they are some of the first few chipsets to support up to 10GB of LPDDR4X RAM.
One of the breakthrough features of the new Helio chipsets is the new HyperEngine gaming technology. According to MediaTek, this new technology allows the chipsets to support a wide-ranging array of new functions which are expected to improve the overall gaming experience of users. One of the neat new features of the HyperEngine technology is the capability to combine WiFi networking with LTE connectivity in order to boost signal and data strength.
It would appear that MediaTek focused some of its breakthroughs on connectivity. The new Helio chipsets are capable of connecting into two Wi-Fi connections at the same time. MediaTek said that this new feature allows for a more reliable connection with fast data transfer and low latency.
The new chipsets also have HDR10 support and display touch acceleration. These two features allow gamers to have a more fluid and seamless gaming experience.
Gaming is one of the fastest-growing niches in the smartphone industry, and chipset makers are starting to capitalize on this lucrative segment of the market. With rivals like Qualcomm already fielding their own series of chipsets aimed at this very segment of the market. MediaTek has hinted that one of these two new Helio G90 chipsets will find its way into a Xiaomi smartphone which is intended to be released in India within the foreseeable future.
Even notable desktop gaming companies are now entering the mobile gaming business. Companies like Razer and Asus, with its ROG brand, have already released their own gaming smartphones. While MediaTek does not manufacture smartphones, its chipsets are at the heart of some of the most popular smartphone brands sold all over the world.
