Sometime last year, fans were abuzz over the possibility of a Dexter season 9 reboot. Rumors suggested that the series will return with new episodes by September 2018, following the release of a poster with the faces of Michael C. Hall (as Dexter) and Yvonne Strahovski (as Hannah McKay).

However, the poster turned out to be fan-made and was not an official release from Showtime. The network also denied that there were active plans to bring back the show to supposedly collaborated with Netflix.

Thus, fall TV season 2018 rolled out without Dexter season 9 in Showtime's line-up. Executives of the network also said that rumors about the show's return on the air are merely fans' speculations.

In an era of reboots on television, however, star Michael C. Hall shared that he is open to the idea of doing the show again. Speaking with Daily Beastthe actor said that his stand about a Dexter season 9 reboot is "never say never" and that the possibility of a revival has been discussed before.

"There have been different possibilities that have come up. They haven't felt worth doing. But there's still something potentially there," the actor said.

Dexter was about a forensic technician who worked for the Miami Police Department who had an alter-ego as a serial killer. It was based on the book "Darkly Dreaming Dexter," which has been written by Jeff Lindsay.

The show ran from 2006 to 2013 and lorded over Showtime's line-up in its earlier seasons. However, the former popular series, which earned dozens of Emmy nominations, received criticisms for how Dexter season 8 was wrapped up.

Hall acknowledged that fans have been unhappy with the finale; thus, they're looking towards Dexter season 9 for closure. However, straight from the horse's mouth, Hall said that no one from the cast nor crew is making plans to develop the next season.

Meanwhile, sources close to the actor told Hollywood Life that Dexter season 9 should be considered a "dead project." The actor would like to separate himself from the Showtime series and be known for other roles apart from the serial killer that made him famous.

"He appreciates what the character did for his career and bank account, but he wants to move on from the character forever," the source said. In fact, Hall is currently doing a new TV show called Shadowplay in Prague for StudioCanal. This show is expected to be released in 2020.
